ADOPTING A BABY IS A BIT EXTREME, BUT HOW ABOUT HELPING HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN IN MALAWI

Real Gap (www.realgap.co.uk), the UK's most comprehensive gap year provider, has just introduced the Malawi Sports Coaching and Schools Teaching Project, starting in November. “Sport unites people from all walks of life” says Africa Programme Manager Marc Crouch. “It can have a huge positive impact on disadvantaged lives.”

The new programme helps to teach popular sports such as football, netball and volleyball in primary and secondary schools on the shores of Lake Malawi.  Volunteers will be involved in organising after school sporting events such as clubs, tournaments and matches, and will also help to train more local coaches.

Due to the heat, most sports activities take place in the afternoons and evenings when temperatures are a little cooler. Volunteers have their mornings free to offer extra academic support to schools, or visit local areas of interest.

There is also a real need for academic teaching. Less sporty volunteers are needed to help to teach primary and secondary level children subjects including English, maths and science.

This project is ideal for those who want to improve the health and well being of the young children of Malawi, as well as explore the truly outstanding beauty of Lake Malawi and the rest of the country. Volunteers stay in a shared volunteer house on the shores of Lake Malawi, which includes three meals a day. 4 weeks costs from £899. Other durations are available.

Offering travel, work and volunteer projects in over 32 countries, Real Gap experience has more choice of programmes and destinations than any other operator, and the team's specialist knowledge is second to none when it comes to gap year options. There are hundreds of suggestions in the colourful Real Gap brochure or on the informative website (www.realgap.co.uk). Sister company Gap year for Grown Ups (www.gapyearforgrownups.co.uk) offers the same sort of programmes for adults aged 30plus.
