Africa expedition - Tanzania
Read about our Tanzania Expedition
Real Gap has put together an Africa expedition designed for more intrepid travellers who really want to experience everything Africa has to offer whilst travelling more ‘off the beaten track' - the ‘Gap Year Expedition - Tanzania' programme. Tanzania is an ideal destination for an Africa expedition - it has some of the best wildlife in Africa, some fantastic beaches and is also the location of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Real Gap's Africa expedition to Tanzania travels to all of Tanzania's essential places of interest, but also visits many other areas most conventional overland tours to the area never get to. Travellers on this Africa expedition receive tuition in Swahili and get involved with some hugely rewarding volunteer projects. Volunteer work is a great way to get to know the local people and experience the ‘real' Africa whilst doing something extremely worthwhile at the same time.
The list of game reserves in Tanzania for viewing wildlife speaks for itself - Ruaha, the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and the incredible Ngorongoro Crater are all in Tanzania - and Real Gap's Africa expedition provides ample opportunity to explore all of them. On an Africa expedition to Tanzania you are almost certain to see all of the ‘Big Five' (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) as well as countless other animal and bird species.
One advantage Tanzania has over many other countries for an Africa expedition is that it has possesses some of the finest beaches in Africa. An Africa expedition can be tiring at times (getting up at the crack of dawn for game viewing can take its toll!) and it's important to find time to have some fun and simply relax. The setting for Real Gap's Africa expedition base camp in Tanzania is Mbezi Beach - which is located ten miles or so from the lively capital city Dar es Salaam and is a great place to spend time chilling out. The Africa expedition to Tanzania also includes a journey in a traditional dhow boat to the stunning Indian Ocean spice island of Zanzibar.
The experience which really sets Real Gap's Africa expedition to Tanzania apart from anything else, however, is the five weeks travellers on the programme spend living with a Maasai tribal community in an idyllic setting close to Mount Kilimanjaro. Travellers on the Africa expedition help teach English to the Maasai during their time with them and, in return, the Maasai teach them all about their culture and way of life.
Africa expedition - Tailor madeIf you like the idea of an Africa expedition but would rather to travel to other countries in Africa than Tanzania this isn't a problem. It's possible to ‘tailor make' your own individual Africa expedition by picking out one or more programmes in any country and then building other travel around them. It's well worth spending some time exploring the ‘Africa' section of the Real Gap website for ideas and information. Once you know roughly where you want to go and what you want to do on your Africa expedition, call one of Real Gap's team of expert travel advisers and they will endeavour to put something together that exactly matches your criteria.
