Africa gap year - Gap year programmes in Africa
Africa is a fantastic gap year destination. The wildlife in Africa is arguably the most exciting in the world and there are beautiful landscapes of every description to be found across the continent.
Botswana, in southern Africa is well known because it's the location of the Okavango Delta - one of Africa's most famous areas for viewing wildlife. Okavango is the largest inland delta in the world and is teeming with some of Africa's most diverse wildlife, from large mammals such as elephants through to numerous types of bird species. Many gap year travellers visit Botswana to volunteer on a wildlife project and Botswana is the location of Real Gap's Okavango Delta programme.

Ghana, on the west coast of Africa, is one of Africa's best kept secrets. It's generally considered to be one of the safest countries in Africa to visit, and it has a winning combination of some fantastic beaches on the coast and superb areas for viewing wildlife inland. Real Gap also operates an excellent people-based volunteer programme in this part of Africa. Volunteers help provide vital support to some of Africa's most impoverished communities.
Kenya, on the east coast of Africa, is one of the most popular gap year destinations in Africa and is one of the best places in Africa to view wildlife. Kenya's Masai Mara is one of Africa's most famous game reserves and Africa's ‘big five' - rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion - animals can be found with relative ease here, (although leopards are one of Africa's more elusive animals and can be a bit of a challenge). If you want to help with the conservation of the wildlife of this area in Africa then Real Gap's ‘Maasai Elephant Conservation' is an excellent option. Volunteers on this elephant conservation project work directly with the Maasai tribes of Kenya directly, and it's one of Real Gap's most rewarding programmes in Africa.

Namibia, on the southwest coast of Africa, has a diverse range of attractive landscapes and is another great place in Africa to view the continent's unique wildlife. Highlights in this part of Africa include Etosha National Park and Fish River Canyon. Real Gap's Africa programmes in Namibia are dedicated to Africa wildlife conservation. Volunteers will be dealing with an extremely wide variety of animals and play a part in the crucial wildlife conservation of Africa.
West Africa is becoming an increasingly popular destination and French-speaking Senegal attracts more visitors than any other country in this part of Africa. Senegal is generally considered to be one of the safest countries in Africa, as well as being home to some of Africa's most beautiful beaches and some great places to view wildlife. Senegal is also the location of Real Gap's ‘Senegal Community Volunteer Programme' one of our most rewarding and varied people-based volunteer programmes in Africa. Volunteers on this programme in Africa have the choice of getting involved in a wide range of projects - from HIV and Aids education to agricultural and irrigation projects.
South Africa is home to some of the best places to view wildlife in Africa. South Africa also has more Real Gap volunteer programmes than any other country in Africa - so there is a wide choice of highly rewarding projects available, both working with endangered wildlife and with local people.
If you want to experience adventure and excitement on your gap year then Africa is an ideal and beautiful destination. For more in-depth details on all of Real Gap's programmes in Africa, as well as the countries themselves, simply click on the relevant links or speak to one of our travel advisors.
