Australasia gap year - Gap year programmes in Australasia

The region of Australasia is comprised of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands (the most visited of which being Fiji). Australasia is undoubtedly the most popular region in which to travel on a gap year. When you look at everything Australasia has to offer this fact isn't surprising. For starters Australasia generally has a warm and pleasant climate (especially during our winter!) and is home to some of the world's best beaches. Australasia is also a good region in which to pick up work on your travels in order to make your gap year money go further - and Real Gap can help arrange working holidays visas for both Australia and New Zealand. Australasia is an approximate half-way point for anyone travelling on a round the world ticket. This makes Australasia a logical area in which to spend a bit more time and save money before continuing on your travels.

The number one destination within Australasia is Australia. Real Gap's numerous programmes in Australasia include paid work packages, volunteer conservation work and leisure-only programmes such as the ‘Learn to Surf in Australia.' To get an idea of the many different types of programme Real Gap offers specifically in Australia then the ‘The Real Ultimate Aussie Package' is a good reference point. Most gap year travellers find work in one of the major cities such as Sydney or Melbourne, but Real Gap can also arrange work on a ranch on a genuine Aussie outback farm. Australia is by far the largest country in Australasia and, away from the practical aspect of finding work and earning money, there is loads to see and do there.

The second most popular region for gap year travellers in Australasia is New Zealand. New Zealand is four hours or so by plane from Australia and possesses its own quite different and unique character and environment. Real Gap has several programmes in this part of Australasia and to get an idea of what's possible in New Zealand then the ‘New Zealand - The Real Kiwi Essentials Package' is a good starting reference point.

Another popular place to visit in Australasia on a gap year is the Pacific Island of Fiji. This part of Australasia is easy to fit in to a round the world itinerary and, rather then being somewhere to work, is simply a great place in which to lie on a tropical beach and relax. Fiji's capital city, and major international airport, is Nadi. However, visitors to this part of Australasia have generally come for one reason alone - Fiji's superb beaches. Once again the easiest, most cost effective and sociable way to travel around Fiji is by bus. Real Gap can pre-arrange these bus passes for you - ‘Travel Fiji - Feejee Experience Bus Passes' - and they work on the same ‘hop on, hop off' principle as the Oz Experience and Kiwi Experience bus passes. The Feejee Experience allows you to travel away from the usual beaten tourist track, and the bus drivers also double up as highly knowledgeable tour guides.

Whether you want to get a paid job, do some volunteer work or simply see some sights and have some fun on your gap year - the chances are that Australasia will tick all of the right boxes.
