About the wildlife sanctuary
The Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at the Western end of Kangaroo Island, South Australia and lies between Kelly Hill Caves and Flinders Chase National Park, 100km west of Kingscote, the largest town on KI.
The Sanctuary was first established in 1997, when it was converted from farming land. It covers an area of 3,845 hectares, with 6km of spectacular coastline and cliffs, it is the largest privately owned conservation property on KI. Within the sanctuary you will find many different species including Tammar wallabies, Western Grey Kangaroos, Pigmy, Ringtail and Brushtail Possums, Echidnas, Koalas and birdlife. In winter the area is visited by the migrating whales, often seen just offshore.
The sanctuary's conservation work is funded by the accommodation offered to holidaymakers and the tours offered to guests and public. This is truly an exceptional place with its abundant wildlife and pristine coastline. The sanctuary's aim is to create 'wild environments for wild animals', so guests here can watch and learn from their behaviour in their natural environment. Nocturnal tours are conducted each evening to give visitors to the Island the ultimate wildlife experience.
