Backpacking holidays

For many travellers, backpacking holidays are the only holiday to have. And thousands of students go backpacking on a gap year every year. So…

Backpacking holidays What do backpacking holidays involve?
One of the reasons backpacking holidays are so popular is because they're a way of travelling on a budget. Most backpackers stay in hostels, which are one of the cheapest forms of accommodation. For most backpacking holidays, all you need is a rucksack (a lot easier to transport than a pull along suitcase!), a passport and a sense of adventure. Obviously, backpacking around the world involves taking a little more than this - see our What to pack guide for more information.

Are backpacking holidays…grotty?
We'll be honest with you - it's not the same as taking an all-inclusive package with five-star accommodation. But then, that's not what backpacking around the world is about!

Backpackers choose backpacking holidays because of the sense of adventure and the freedom it allows them. They're more interested in seeing the world than whether their room has room service and having the right shoes for the right occasion. You don't have to live like a tramp on backpacking holidays but you shouldn't take your designer clothes either.
Apart from anything else, if you're backpacking around the world, you won't want you rucksack to be too heavy. Take it from travel advisers who know!

Hostels are a basic, but usually cheap and comfortable. They're also a great place to meet other backpackers!

Are backpacking holidays safe?
Basically, backpacking holidays are as safe as any other holiday you'll take. Backpacking around the world isn't guaranteed to be safe, but then again, neither is going to the cinema. If you're worried about backpacking on a gap year, you can take our Gap Year Safety Course and read our Backpacker Hostel Fire Safety Guide.

Where can I take backpacking holidays?
The beauty of backpacking around the world is that you can simply throw your rucksack on your bag and go! Hostels are springing up all over the world in Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australasia. To see where backpackers' accommodation is available, take a look at our hostel-booking page, where you can book hostels online.

Not sure where to go on your backpacking holidays? Why not Thailand? Take a look at our Backpacking in Thailand advice page. If it's general advice you're looking for, try our Backpacking page or call a Real Gap travel adviser a call on 01892 516164. They've all been backpacking themselves, and will be more than happy to answer your questions.
