Bolivia Youth Volunteer Project
The centre is an orphanage that serves one municipality of Sucre, helping children who have been abandoned or are at risk in their families. Most are between the ages of 5 and 18. All the children attend public schools in the morning before moving on to the centre in the afternoon. Here they are given workshops in carpentry, shoe making, metallurgy and leather working. The idea is to help them develop a manual skill, in the event they are unable to attend university in the future.
Volunteers are needed in the following areas: administration, secretarial work, psychology department, English professors and above all, people who know carpentry, shoe making, metallurgy and leather working. Also needed are those familiar with music, computers and/or sports instruction, such as: baseball, basketball and football.
Volunteer work activities Volunteers are desperately needed to help the children develop their manual skills. Your work hours are varied; you can work either in the mornings, afternoons, evenings or weekends.
Your day to day activities vary according to your interests and volunteers must be flexible and have some experience of working with adolescents.
This is a great placement for independent volunteers who can use their skills, both social and practical, in order to help the kids with manual labour, sports and English.
Requirements All the volunteers need to have some knowledge of the Spanish language before starting their volunteer work, not only to get the most out of the project, but also to get around and integrate with the locals. If you do not already speak Spanish it is strongly recommended you take our language course prior to the start of the programme. These are available for 2 or 4 weeks, and are easily combined with the project.
Duration We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks as this facilitates the build up of trust between you, the children and the staff.
Accommodation & Meals Our volunteer apartment is located 8 blocks from the volunteer project; a 20 minute walk, or a short bus ride away. Living here gives volunteers the opportunity to live independently and allows them to come and go as they please.
You can request a shared or private room, but will share a bathroom, kitchen and living room with other volunteers. Please note meals are not included during your stay in the apartment. Usually volunteers take it in turns to cook meals or simply eat out at local restaurants, which are very cheap by western standards. A standard 3-course meal can cost as little as $1-$2 for the moneyconscious volunteer!
A nearby host family live on the same street, and provide a laundry service for the duration of your stay.
If you should have any questions about the programmes then don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01892 516164 or contact the Latin America Programme Manager, Matt Fenton at matt.fenton@realgap.co.uk
