Borneo Tribeschildren and Horses Volunteer
Here is an example of your itinerary (subject to change)
Day 1: Miri Have a meet and greet on arrival at Miri Airport. Transfer from airport to Miri hotel for your welcome dinner.
Day 2: Horses Transfer to the farm, check into the eco-lodge and settle in. You will receive a welcome speech and briefing on Sarawak and the Borneo farm, the programme and health and safety procedures. There will be a welcome dinner and time to socialise with staff and locals. In the morning you will have a tour of the farm. In the afternoon you will visit the horses and have a briefing and training on horse riding.
Day 3: Children In the morning you will visit the local kindergarten where you will receive an introduction to the school system and a chance to interact with the children through simple games. In the afternoon you will head back to the farm and continue with the horse training. You will then collect vegetables for dinner and discover local cuisines through cooking and tasting.
Day 4: Trees and CO2 Your morning will be spent planting and maintaining trees and learning about basic tropical rainforest ecology. Volunteers will get the chance to offset their carbon dioxide emissions of travelling by air by planting trees. In the afternoon you will prepare for kindergarten activities. These activities will be put to the test when you return back to the Pre-school. Trekking and wildlife spotting on the farm and in the nearby national park.
Day 5: Children Project In the morning you will visit the local kindergarten and interact with the children through activities prepared the day before. In the afternoon you will carry out a school project with the local children, such as landscaping and how to encourage the local parents involvement.
Day 6: On the farm In the morning you will undertake light farm work such as picking coffee berries and harvest pitaya. The afternoon will be spent horse training and riding. Collect vegetables for dinner and discover local cuisines by cooking and tasting. Evening special – Yoga therapy to relax.
Day 7: Free and easy Free and easy day! (Free and easy day is given on a Sunday and may vary subject to dates).
Day 8: Lake cruise Morning – Light farm work. In the afternoon you will be taken on a lake cruise at the nearby National Park.
Day 9: Tribal traditions In the morning you will learn about forest rehabilitation and conservation activities. In the afternoon you will have the chance to learn some traditional dance, tribal music and play local guitar (the ‘sape’).
Day 10: Tribal traditions Learn to process jungle resources and make farm equipment and handicraft. More on traditional dance and tribal music.
Day 11: On the farm A morning of light farm work and farm building maintenance work and an afternoon spent horse training and riding. Collect vegetables for dinner and discover local cuisines by cooking and tasting.
Day 12: Longhouse Trades Visit a rural trading centre; longhouse of the Orang Ulu and Iban ethnic groups and learn a little bit about their ways of life.
Day 13: On the farm In the morning you will visit an oil palm plantation and mill to gain in-depth knowledge about oil palm cultivation. Afternoon - light farm work. Night trekking and wildlife spotting.
Day 14: Final day Today you will go back to the school to bid a fond farewell to the children. In the afternoon you will have time to pack and have your own leisure time. In the evening you will have a farewell dinner to bring your time at the project to an end.
Day 15: Departure Time to say goodbye to new found friends and transfer back to Miri airport, or extend travel.
