Borneo gap year - Gap year programmes in Borneo
If you really want to get off the beaten track on a year out taking a gap year in Borneo is an excellent option. If you take a gap year in Borneo you will be travelling to one of the most remote places on earth - some areas in the dense central rainforests of Borneo remain relatively undiscovered even to this day (to put this in perspective an entirely new species of cat-like mammal was discovered in the Borneo jungle as recently as December 2005)! A gap year in Borneo won't appeal to everyone but if you are after adventure, challenge and excitement it's a place well worth considering for your year out.
Gap year in Borneo - Go ape!
If you take a gap year in Borneo you will be visiting the home of the orang-utan ape (the only other place these unique and beautiful animals can be found is on the Indonesian island of Sumatra). Orang-utan means ‘People of the forest' in Malay and they are the only great ape to be found outside of Asia. An undoubted highlight of any gap year in Borneo is enjoying the privilege of seeing orang-utans in their natural habitat. Sadly, largely due to the deforestation of the rainforests, the orang-utan is in serious danger of becoming extinct - there are now only thought to be around 20,000 remaining in the world today.
A unique and rewarding way to spend a gap year in Borneo is to volunteer there with Real Gap's ‘Orang-utan Interaction Volunteer.' The focus of this ‘Gap year in Borneo' programme is both to rehabilitate orang-utans in captivity and also help with the conservation of orang-utans who remain in the wild.
Gap year in Borneo - Tribal Community
Another option for a gap year in Borneo is to get involved with Real Gap's ‘Orang-utan and Tribal Community Volunteer.' This ‘Gap year in Borneo' programme still gives volunteers the opportunity to work with orang-utans but there's also a greater emphasis on assisting the Iban with local community-based projects. For example you could spend part of your gap year in Borneo teaching local school children or working on a local building project.
