Botswana Okavango Wildlife and Adventure
Project location The volunteer camp is based in North West Botswana on the west banks of the Okavango River, roughly 300km from the regional capital, Maun. It is situated close to the rural African village of Sepopa, which is one of the main gateways to the river.
Botswana Botswana, one of Africa's most stable countries, is the continent's longest continuous multiparty democracy. It is very low in crime and has a good human rights record. It is also the world's largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation. Botswana protects some of Africa's largest areas of wilderness and migration routes. In an area the size of France and with a population of 1.8 million, it is sparsely populated. The Kalahari Desert, home to a dwindling band of Bushman hunter-gatherers, makes up much of the territory and most areas are too arid to sustain any agriculture other than cattle. From delta to desert and village to bush, in Botswana, you will experience Africa’s best-kept secrets.
Free Time In addition to your project work, every week our expert team of local guides will take you to some of the other places that make Botswana so special. The excursions and activities that you take part in will be dependent upon free time and group interest, but here are some examples of the type of things that you may have the opportunity to do:
1) Tsodilo Hills World Heritage Site: Before the Bantu tribes headed south, Botswana was inhabited mainly by the San Bushman people. In a hidden corner of Ngamiland this excursion takes volunteers to see and camp out at the home to mystical rock paintings dating back some 30,000 years. It is a memorable trip for any historian, anthropologist, or generally inquisitive volunteer! 2) Seronga Polers Trust: The villages living within the Okavango Delta have traditionally used Mokoro’s, dug out wooden canoes to traverse the wetland channels. In the town of Seronga, located on the Eastern side of the Delta, this art is kept alive by a community project designed to teach travellers while employing local people. Taking part in their activities is great fun and a good opportunity to learn new skills. 3) Xai Xai Bushman Experience: Located 250km in the middle of the Botswanan wilderness next to the Namibian border is one of the last remaining San Bushman settlements, Xai Xai. On this overnight camping excursion you will get the chance to see how the traditional San Bushman live and their many traditions. 4) Island Camping Trips: There are times when you will want to head out and explore the delta further a field. When gaps occur in the long running programmes you will get the chance to load up the project boat and head out into the bush for one or two nights island camping. This is a fantastic opportunity for a ‘back to basics’ experience and camp under the blanket of stars of the incredible African sky. Depending on time and availability there are also the following other activities that the project leaders like to show you during your stay:
• Houseboat Cruise • Moremi and Mahango Game Reserve • Lake Ngami, fishing and Sundowners Please speak to your project coordinator if you are interest in these activities or any other excursions available and they will be happy to arrange this for you.
Getting There You will need to arrange flights to either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa and then a connection to Maun, Botswana. From here you will be met by our team and transferred by road to camp, which takes roughly three and a half hours and is 350kms.
