With Rio as your backdrop, this programme will equip you with the necessary climbing skills to have you scaling the tallest peaks of this incredible South American city. With an introduction to rock climbing and a daily structured programme, you are sure to be addicted to this physically and mentally challenging adrenaline sport!

Rio de Janeiro is a city renowned for its beautiful beaches, fun-loving people and its breathtaking panoramic views! It’s also known for being surrounded by some of the best introductory climbing spots any city has to offer, making this the ideal location for beginners in this sport. However, you don’t have to be a beginner to enjoy this programme, as you can use your existing skills to enjoy some of the more challenging, yet rewarding climbs.

Programme Age Limit
Minimum age 18, maximum age determined by potential participant’s health

Programme Requirements
Participants should ensure they are fit enough to join a programme of this nature.

Rock Climbing
Rock climbing has a number of different styles, though it can be divided into 2 broad forms: aided climbing and free climbing. Aided climbing involves using ropes, bolts and other devices in order to support the leader and their partner(s). Free climbing is more extreme, where the climbers do not use ropes or other devices; instead, they use naturally formed ledges and experience to reach the summit. This programme focuses on aided climbs.

Programme Information
The course is geared for those with little or no rock climbing experience and covers the primary skills of safely climbing multi-pitch routes. With 27 hours of climbing lessons you will become a competent climber as you learn to master the fundamentals of the rope system and rappelling (abseiling).

Multi-Pitch Routes
Multi-pitch routes are where the leader (in this case, your instructor) climbs un-aided in order to set a secure pitch/belay. In other words, your instructor will climb on ahead of you, to set the rope into pre-fixed or purposefully set bots. Your responsibility as the second climber will be to remove the bolts as you climb, though in some cases the bolts will be pre-fixed and not for removal. This method ensures that you remain safe.

What you will learn
You will learn a variety of techniques and skills, which will enable you to complete more challenging and demanding climbs. Beginning with the history of mountaineering, you’ll be taught how climbing has evolved into a competitive and varied sport. You will also learn about the ethics and environmental implications of climbing, to ensure you always act responsibly towards the environment and your co-climbers. This is a very important part of the programme.

The course focuses on the following:
    • Safety instructions
    • Following a lead climb
    • Multi-pitch climbing
    • Climbing Equipment
    • Knots
    • Belaying
    • Abseiling
    • Climbing styles
    • Climbing techniques
    • Fixed line ascension
    • Grading system – the system that determines the difficulty of a climb. While this varies from country to country, there is gradually becoming a universal system of grading.

These facilities include:
    • Swimming pool (if you don’t like the beach!)

Many important amenities are within walking distance i.e. banks, supermarkets, shops etc.

Breakfast is included at the hostel; however, you will need to self-cater for your other daily meals when in Rio. You should budget £30-40/week for this to eat well, more if you wish to eat out on occasion.
