Volunteers will get the opportunity to become part of this incredible cultural fusion, joining local people to take part in classes of the traditional dance.  The classes are co-ordinated by two local instructors, specialising in different styles, Angola and Regional. You will learn some basic Capoeira movements and how to play berimbau and drums.

Project Age Limit
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health

Project Requirements
All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to participate and get fully involved in classes and activities.

Project Orientation
You will be collected from Salvador Airport (‘Dois de Julho’) by an on-site co-ordinator. Depending on your time of arrival, you will either be transported to the boat harbour for travel to Cairu, or you will be taken to a guesthouse in Salvador, where you will stay overnight for a small fee. The following morning you will be collected and accompanied to Cairu by bus and boat. Once in Cairu you will receive a full orientation detailing the project and you will learn more about Cairu, the area and the rainforest.

Accommodation and Meals
During your stay you will live with a local host family, allowing you to experience the Brazilian way of life. All host families are carefully chosen to ensure you have a comfortable and welcoming stay.  Accommodation may be in single or double rooms and breakfast and dinner are provided. Lunch is arranged in local restaurants.  Your meals will be fresh and tasty, with fish being a popular dish.  Special arrangements can be made if you have any specific dietary requirements.

Host family accommodation includes the usual facilities: shower/bath, laundry once a week as part of the family laundry, use of the telephone (as agreed with the host family) and access to common living areas. Guests are expected to be respectful of families and their homes at all times.

Project Support
Throughout your time in Salvador you will have the support and guidance of a team of project co-ordinators based in the area.  They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.  The on-site staff will be on hand throughout the day to ensure your comfort and safety.

In addition, we will provide you with a 24-hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
