Brazil Portuguese Language School
Get to grips with the Portuguese Language in the buzzing city of Rio de Janeiro. Known for its party atmosphere and gorgeous beaches, there is no better way to experience the best of Brazilian culture. The Language School provides top class teaching to get you chatting with the locals as quickly as possible, whilst keeping the lessons relaxed, fun and interactive.
Project Age Limit Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health
The Language School The Rio Language School has over 33 years experience in teaching the Portuguese language and is one of the biggest in Brazil.
You will be taking part in a course that has been specifically designed for foreign students who need to learn Portuguese for both professional and personal use. But the focus isn’t only on these areas; you can also look into any area that you are interested in.
Classes You will find that the main method of teaching at the language school will be through conversation - so participating and speaking in class are very important to improving your language skills quickly. You will also be using the language school’s own educational materials, specifically designed to make learning of the Portuguese language particularly easy and fun!
There will generally be 5 or 6 students in each class, and the maximum class size is 10. The size of the class means that you will receive more attention from the teacher and will also make participation easier. The aim is to get you communicating, understanding and using the language right from the start.
Language school hours are 3 hours a day, 5 days a week so you have plenty of time to explore the city, and perhaps travel further afield at the weekends.
Project Requirements All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to participate and get fully involved in classes and activities.
Project Orientation You will be collected from Rio’s International Airport ‘Galeo–Antonio Carlos Jobim’ by an on-site co-ordinator and taken to the hostel where you will be able to settle in. The following day you will be collected from the hostel and taken to the language school where you will have an introduction to the school, and a talk about what you will be doing before you meet your teacher and begin the course.
Accommodation and Meals During your stay in Rio de Janeiro, you will be accommodated in a host family, allowing you to experience the Brazilian way of life. All host families are carefully vetted and inspected before any placement is considered and all families receive an orientation on their obligations to their guests. Accommodation may be in single or shared rooms and the accommodation is on a halfboard basis (breakfast and dinner). For lunch you can sample the local restaurants and get a taste for the delicious Brazilian flavours. You should budget around $15 to $20 a day for meals.
Host family accommodation includes the usual facilities: shower/bath, laundry once a week as part of the family laundry, use of the telephone (as agreed with the host family), access to common living areas, etc. Guests are expected to be respectful of families and their homes at all times.
Project Support Throughout your time in Rio you will have the support and guidance of a team of project coordinators based in the city. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.
The language school staff will be on hand throughout the day to ensure your comfort and safety. In addition, we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
