Rio de Janeiro Rio, called ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ (‘Marvellous City’) by its residents is Brazil’s second largest city and it’s most famous. The city is sandwiched between the sea and the jungle-covered mountains, providing the most beautiful setting, and with the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Rio is certainly a feast for the eyes. The most famous landmarks, known the world over, are the Corcovado – the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer that looms over the city, and Sugar Loaf Mountain, both of which offer spectacular views of the city as it sprawls out to the North and South along the coast. Although not renowned for it, Rio also has a great architectural heritage hidden amongst all the freshly built skyscrapers – discovering them is half the fun of exploring the city.
Free time You can work as many hours as you wish although you are only required to work 2 hours per day, or 10 hours per week. You will not finish any later than 6pm. We encourage you to explore Rio as much as possible in your free time; there is a lot on offer. The cable car up to Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açucar) is particularly impressive, as is the well-known statue of Christ (Christ o Redentor), which looks down upon the city. The world famous beaches are ideal for volleyball, football, or simply relaxing by the crystal clear sea!
The school organises weekly excursions and your free time will be at the weekends.
Getting There You will need to arrange your flights to Rio de Janeiro airport. You’ll be met and transferred to your accommodation where you will be made to feel at home right away.
