Programme Introduction You will be volunteering in a day centre located in the Pavão-Pavãozinho favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The centre is dedicated to providing health care and education to local impoverished families, who are trapped in a depressing cycle of poverty, deprived of education, and unemployment.
The aim is to break the cycle by teaching English classes, tutoring students, and helping to arrange and engage in leisure activities with the children. The outreach project currently provides help for over 400 children, and medical support for over 1500 families. This is an amazing opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of some of Brazil’s most underprivileged children.
Accommodation and Meals Should you choose the language school and Youth Outreach Project, you will be staying with a Brazilian host family. All host families are carefully screened and must meet our strict requirements before we allow them to accommodate volunteers. The families with whom you will stay are middle-class and live in safe homes.
You will be given a key to the front door so you may come and go as you please. The families are close friends of the staff, and their routines must be respected at all times. The journey length to the school varies from about 20-40 minutes by bus. You will be provided with two meals a day, and have a private room with a shared bathroom. The hosts will mainly speak Portuguese. This will help you learn the language quicker and get the most out of the programme. There will be at least one member of the family that speaks English if some translation is needed.
If you choose to do only the Youth Outreach Project, you will stay at a hostel, with only breakfast included. It will take between 30-60 minutes to reach the project centre from the hostel. More expensive options are offered – you can pay extra to stay with a host family. Please contact us for further details.
Project Support Throughout your stay in Rio you will have the support and guidance of the coordinator and house workers. They will be able to provide you with any help or advice you may need during your stay.
In addition to the in-country support, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number should you need to contact one of our UK staff at any time.
Project Orientation Once you have been met and picked up from the airport, you will be taken to your accommodation to settle in. On your first full day, your coordinators will guide you through your orientation and help to answer any questions you may have.
