Many of Rio's children live in great poverty, their families struggling to make the means to buy even the basic necessities. This project works closely with these children giving them education and leisure activities, improving their future prospects.

Your Typical Itinerary

Volunteer schedules may vary, so you will have the opportunity to help with various student activities. Below is a list of general volunteer categories and the specific activities for each area in which you could work:

The Nursery

  • Help and supervise at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner time
  • Help organise the classroom at lunch and/or at the end of the day
  • Help take children to the solarium
  • Play with the children
  • Comb hair and/or dress children
  • Brush children’s teeth
  • Lead and/or help with classroom activities

Pre-school

  • Take children to the different classroom facilities when necessary
  • Help at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner times
  • Tell stories and/or sing songs
  • Organise the classroom
  • Help children brush their teeth
  • Lead and/or help with classroom projects and activities
  • Music is an important part of Brazilian culture. If you play an instrument, we encourage you to do so in the classroom.

1st Grade

  • Tell stories and/or sing songs
  • Help with field trips
  • Tutor
  • Help at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner times
  • Take children to different classroom buildings when necessary
  • Read
  • Take part in school activities

2nd-4th Grade

  • Help organise and/or clean lockers and drawers
  • Help at field trips
  • Tell stories and/or sing
  • Tutor
  • Help with bulletin board
  • Be present at school’s activities

“Chalé” (study hall for older children)

  • Tutor
  • Help at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner times
  • Chaperone
  • Keep attendance list
  • Mentor

Literacy Class I and II

  • Help at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner times
  • Help when class takes field trips (class control, etc…)
  • Help organise the classroom
  • Hand out material that will be used
  • Tell stories
  • Tutor the children

Administration

  • Help input data in the system
  • Help control stocks of uniforms as well as their sales
  • File documents
  • Answer the phone
  • Help during autumn enrolment
  • Make the Birthday Lists
  • Make copies (authorised)
  • Help with bulletin boards

Director’s office

  • Organise and distribute office supplies
  • Help organise and/or clean cabinets and files
  • Feed the Volunteer Databank
  • Take pictures of everyday activities in order to update website
  • Make and/or answer phone calls
  • Translate selected informational material
  • Lead tours of Solar for visitors
  • Raise donations

Library

  • Be creative!
  • Organise donated books
  • Read/suggest books to children (0-16)

Please be aware that certain volunteer positions require more Portuguese fluency than others. Therefore, some projects are better suited to you based on your language skills.
