Brazilian Cuisine

Brazilian Cuisine Main CoursesBeans, beans and more beans! Brazilians love their beans and they're cooked using different methods in dishes all over the country. Feijoada can be found in most parts of Brazil, and is a rich dish of beans, various parts of a pig and/or beef jerky (sun-dried beef), topped off with orange. Pizzas can be interesting - chocolate, banana and cinnamon have found their way on as fillings, much to the disgust of the Italians!
These are some of the regional highlights of Brazilian Cuisine
Northern Brazilian Cuisine: If you travel through the Amazônia region of Brazil, you'll probably come across unfamiliar but interesting ingredients, such as the popular manioc (a green shrub vegetable cooked in stews or deep-fried) and yams (similar to potatoes but larger and longer). You'll also come across fish, alligator and turtle meat, and tacacá, a soup of shrimp, yellow peppers and herbs.
 |
North eastern Brazilian Cuisine: Typical dishes include white rice and the ubiquitous beans (often black here), moqueca, a fish stew, and acarajé, fried balls of black-eyed peas that are filled with mashed shrimp and peanuts or tomatoes and peppers. The region is a fruit lover's dream - you'll find passion fruit, guava, mango, coconuts and custard-apples among others.
South eastern Brazilian Cuisine: Look out for frango com quiabo, which literally translates as chicken with okra, and farofa - a powdery-dish of toasted manioc, meat and spices - which can be sprinkled onto other dishes. Minas Gerais is famous for its cheeses. |
Southern Brazilian Cuisine: Food in the south is distinctly meaty, and there are hundreds of restaurants known as churrascarias serving grilled and barbecued cuts. Don't panic if you're not a meat eater - you'll find pumpkin and squash in Brazilian cuisine too.
Brazilian Cuisine - DessertsYou'll find various types of bolo (cake), quindim (custard with coconut), Brazil's version of rice pudding and particularly in the Minas Gervais area, fried bananas.
Brazilian Cuisine - What to drink in BrazilA caipirinha is the cocktail to have in Brazil, and you won't have any problems finding it. It's made from lime, sugar and ice, with the key ingredient being the spirit cachaça. Cachaça, made from sugarcane juice, is also drunk on its own. In Minas Gervais, it's custom to down a shot before and after a meal.
The abundance of fruit makes for a tantalising array of juices and berries from the Amazônia region make a delicious fizzy drink called guaraná.
