This is a fun, rewarding experience for you, yet more importantly you can help to improve the quality of life for children in need of support and a home. Your enthusiastic energy is needed to enlighten the lives of these disadvantaged children. The building project aims to construct basic shelters, gardens, fences, water systems and other physical structures needed at care centres and child headed households, as well as transferring skills, developing basic accommodation and offering support as an adult role model for the children.

Volunteer Role

You will be helping to develop suitable housing for children that will improve their future prospects of living. You do not need to have any previous experience to enjoy taking part in this project, although skills from the trade would be useful. All we require is for you to be motivated, sensitive to the needs of the communities and willing to give your time to benefit these deprived children.  You will be expected to be creative in your role and work under your own initiative.

As a volunteer, you may get involved in many of the following activities depending on the time of your placement. They include:
  • Shelter improvement - helping to improve basic shelter structures
  • Building of much needed infrastructure
  • Maintenance of existing structures and creation of new houses
  • Painting existing structures and/or painting educational murals
  • Fundraising- organising events to raise awareness and funds to help meet specific needs for vulnerable children

Location

The project is based in the Ezulwini Valley in the two small towns of Ezulwini and Lobamba, Swaziland.

Accommodation and meals

You will be staying at a backpacker lodge in the Ezulwini valley, within 5km of most of the project placements. The lodge provides dorms with bunk beds and communal bathrooms. You also have the opportunity to spend some of your time at the project staying with a Swazi family. Meals will be provided throughout the project and participants will share the cooking duties on a relaxed rotational basis.
