Volunteer Role

The most important role for volunteers is assisting the girls with their schoolwork, so that they can make the very most of their education, so some of your afternoons will be dedicated to tutoring small groups on specific subjects. As most of the children tend to be behind in their schoolwork, it would also be of great assistance if you could also help them with their homework.

Volunteers can organise tuition sessions on the computers to help get the girls computer literate, something that will be of great help to them in the future.

The girls also really enjoy dancing and acting, which gives volunteers the opportunity to direct the children in performances and have a lot of fun! The girls would really appreciate any guidance and initiative in this area, so be prepared to have a lot of enjoyment working with them in preparing shows that can be performed in the local church hall complete with a captive audience.

Activities like these will allow the children to experience the fun of childhood, as well as allowing them to build their self-confidence and teamwork. In the past the children have put on nativity plays, held an open day with music and dancing and have organised fundraising sessions with all proceeds going to the home.

While the older children are at school, you will attend to the smaller children and any that are too ill to go to school. If you are a creative person and enjoy practical activities, any help to do some basic painting of the children’s rooms and varnishing of furniture would be very much appreciated by the staff and children alike. Spending some time helping to prepare the afternoon meal is also an option available to you.
