The project aims to help improve the education that these children receive through developing their love of books and strengthening their self-esteem.

Volunteer Role

To take part in the project, you do not have to be a qualified teacher; a love of books and children, as well as a willingness to take part in basic training is enough.

For the majority of your time on the project you will be giving vital one-on-one help to the children at the centre, however as you gain more confidence you can help out with small groups plus also still helping on a one-on-one basis with some of the others. Improving literacy is not the only thing that you will do, you could also help with the following:
  • Reading one-on-one with children in the classroom
  • Teaching art classes
  • Running a garden project
  • Helping in the school library
  • Working closely with the team at the centre
  • Helping with admin and downloading resources
  • Helping the centres’ book swap at lunch times
  • Testing under supervision
  • Helping out in literacy hour
  • Assisting in the classrooms at times

You will help from around 8.45am to about 2.30pm Monday to Thursday, however you are free to help offer extra tuition until 4pm on these days if they wish. Friday is an optional quiet day with school finishing at 1pm.

Project Location

The project is located 6km from the city centre of Cape Town.

Accommodation & Food

Whilst at the project you will be staying at an apartment that is reasonably close to the City Bowl area, just below the magnificent Table Mountain. The apartment has two bedrooms; each will be a two-share room with one bathroom to share, as well as a kitchen and lounge area.

Three meals a day are provided during your time at the project. You will make your own breakfast from the food provided, lunch will consist of a packed lunch and you will have a cooked meal in the evening.
