South Africa
The southern tip of the great continent of Africa is taken up by a country that has got itself the nickname of the ‘rainbow nation’, due to its melting pot type ethnic make up. It is said many African cultures meet here, it has 11 different official language and many more unofficial ones and beautiful landscapes a plenty. From the wilds of Kruger to the lush green, vineyard strewn undulations of the Garden Route to desert to rugged coastline, South Africa offers relaxation and adventure at every turn. It is the most developed of all the African nations, but is not without its social problems (isn’t everywhere?). As well as having coast on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, South Africa borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho and is a great base for exploring even deeper into Africa.

Climate
The South African’s don’t have much to complain about in terms of the weather – it seems to pretty all right all year round. The mid-winter (June/July) can get pretty nippy, so be prepared if you are heading out there then.

The area that includes Cape Town has a somewhat Mediterranean climate, meaning that it is mild the majority of the time but with the possibility of showers at any time. If you were to ask the locals they would tell you to visit in the March to May periods when the sea winds drop, bringing the temperature up to a very pleasant level. For peak summer average temperatures you are looking at 27°C in December/January and average mid-winter 17 to 19°C

Project Support
Your support throughout this project is supplied by the in country team, who will be on hand throughout your time in Cape Town to offer advice, answer questions and just generally make sure that you are getting on alright!

Project Orientation
You will have your detailed orientation session on your arrival into Cape Town, before you begin work on your project. This orientation will aim to get you settled in and give you a load of information about your project, the other projects in the area and what you should expect as a volunteer. This is the ideal to get any burning questions answered.

Free Time
You’ll have no trouble feeling up your free time in Cape Town. You can head to the beach, ascend Table Mountains for some magnificent views, explore the Cape Peninsula…and so on! Getting out of the city also provides a load of entertainment, from the vineyards of the Garden Route to the fantastic array of wildlife that South Africa has on offer. You’ll have no time to get bored!

Getting There
Flights will need to be arranged to coincide with the start of the project, into Cape Town’s International airport.
