Orientation
On your first full day in Santiago you will be given a comprehensive orientation by one of the project co-ordinators. In addition, you will have a brief interview with the volunteer co-ordinator, to determine what your volunteer schedule will be.
Accommodation and Meals
There are two options for accommodation, depending on which package you choose.
For our language school and volunteering package, you will be staying with a Chilean host family. Our host families are carefully screened and must meet stringent requirements before being accepted onto the project. All are middle-class and live in safe homes, and are close friends of the school staff. The distance from the school varies from about 20-40 minutes by bus. You will be given a key to your host family's home to come and go as you please. The family will provide two meals a day, and a private room with a shared bathroom. They will speak Spanish most of the time, to help you learn the language and get the most out of the programme. There will, however, be at least one member of the family that speaks English.
If you choose the volunteering project alone, you will be staying at a hostel with breakfast included. Commute time to the project can be 30-60 minutes. Cooking dinner and washing up will unfortunately then be your own responsibility!
Free time
As your volunteer placement will involve caring for babies and young children, your hours may alter from time to time, depending on their sleeping/feeding patterns. But generally, your free time will be in the evenings and weekends.
Santiago has many sights and attractions worth a visit in your free time. You may choose to pay a visit to the Viña Concha y Toro; a winery with guided tours and the opportunity to sample renowned local wines.
In addition, a tour of the Parque Forestal and Museo de Bellas Artes is recommended; introducing you to one of the most picturesque parks in Santiago and the most famous art museum.
A couple of excursions will be arranged for you each week by the on-site co-ordinator. You will only have to pay small out of pocket expenses, such as entrance fees etc.
Project Support
Throughout your stay in Chile you will have the support and guidance of our on-site project coordinators. They will be at your disposal, have you any questions, queries or issues.
In addition, we provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number prior to departure, enabling you to contact a UK member of staff at any time of day if necessary.
Project Age Limit
Minimum 17 years, maximum dependent upon individual participant’s health.
