Conservation Work
Many people who take a gap year or career break, particularly if they have a strong interest in wildlife or the environment, choose to do some conservation work on their travels. Some people decide to visit just one place for their conservation work and do it for an extended period while others might fit in just a week or two somewhere as part of a round the world itinerary. If you want to do some conservation work, how much you do and how deeply you become involved with a particular conservation project is up to you. However long you spend working in conservation, you're bound to come away from it having gained a real sense of personal achievement and of having ‘given something back' to that particular country. Not surprisingly there are conservation work projects all over the world. If you do want to do some conservation work you need to decide what type of work you want to do and where you'd like to go.
Conservation work - Australia
| When people think about conservation work they generally think about Third World countries but, of course, conservation work is necessary pretty much everywhere in the world. Australia is by far the most popular year out destination and, if you do visit there and decide you want to give something back, there is conservation work you can help with Down Under. There are conservation projects available all over Australia, often in remote locations away from all the other tourists. Conservation work in Australia is an ideal way to do something really worthwhile, see a different side to Australia and spend time outdoors with other like-minded people. |

Conservation work - Africa
There is conservation work available in numerous African countries. For example, the Kenya Community and Conservation volunteer programme helps teach the locals to co-exist with their precious environment through education, community service and conservation work. The Wildlife Conservation Course Kruger is informative and comprehensive if you are interested in wildlife and in African conservation. Africa is such a vast, diverse continent with an incredible range of flora and fauna that there is certain to be a volunteer project to suit every conservation worker. |
Conservation Work - Asia
There is plenty of conservation work you can get involved with in Asia. For example, you could help the locals with community development projects on our Thailand Experience programme. Asia is a hugely diverse place and there is a wide variety of conservation work you can do there - from helping to preserve the environment to getting involved with agriculture and organic farming.
Conservation Work - Latin America
If you're visiting Latin America on a gap year or career break there are all sorts of conservation work possibilities. For example, in Costa Rica you can help in one of our most hands-on conservation work projects by getting involved with turtle conservation.
Whether you want to spend an entire year doing some conservation work or just a couple of weeks, there is almost bound to be a conservation project somewhere in the world to suit your interests and skills.
