Programme Information The Costa Rica Experience gives you the chance to take part in a 4-week adventure in this amazing country.
Your Volunteer Options Your volunteer placement will be based in San José and you will have the choice between volunteering at a school, day care centre, orphanage or home.
Schools and Day Care Centres If you select this option, your role as a volunteer will be varied and flexible and will generally involve:
- Assisting teachers in the classrooms.
- Arranging educational games and activities
- Teaching children music, IT, arts and crafts
- Organising sports and other physical activities
- Playing with the children
Orphanages and Homes Orphanages and homes have been set up for children who have been abandoned by their parents or have been taken by the government because of abuse and/or neglect. The homes are privately run by volunteers and provide the children with a family-like atmosphere. Your work schedule will be flexible and it is possible for you to work at more than one home or orphanage throughout the day.
Generally volunteers will do the following:
- Plan educational games and activities
- Teach the children arts and crafts
- Organise sports and other physical activities
- Play with the children
- Help in the home and in the kitchen
- Help the children with their homework
Choosing your Volunteer Option Upon booking this programme we will be able to provide you with further information about the different schools, day care centres, orphanages and homes. We will then require you to list your top two preferences with regards to your volunteer placement. When in Costa Rica our volunteer coordinator will take you to see the various schools and day care centres allowing you to make your final choice. Please be aware that projects are subject to availability and wherever possible we will strive to place you in your first choice.
Volunteer Requirements A basic to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is required to take part in this programme.
Project Orientation On day two you will have a comprehensive orientation meeting. Project Support Throughout your stay you will have the support and guidance of a coordinator and their team. They will be able to help you with any questions you may have or advice you may need. In addition, you are also able to contact our UK staff 24 hours a day should you need to via our emergency contact number.
