Orientation
On Monday you will have a comprehensive orientation meeting in Alajuela and be provided with a welcome pack containing lots of useful information about the exciting programme ahead. This will cover all essential topics such as banks and money, transport, places to see, safety precautions and work ethics. In this first meeting, you will also have the opportunity to ask any of those burning questions that you may have.
Accommodation and meals
On arrival in Costa Rica, you will be taken to a hostel in Alajuela where you will be spending your first two nights for your orientation. Following this you’ll be transferred to your project location, this will be decided by our in-country team and is determined by the needs of each project at the time.
Buena Vista: The accommodation at the project is rustic and very basic but comfortable with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. There is no electricity, however both a shower and a bathroom are available (cold water only).
Matapalo: The accommodation at this project is also very basic with just cold water for showers but it does have electricity. However you will be close to a local supermarket, internet access and a number of local and international style restaurants.
At both locations there is an on-site cook who will prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for you. Meals will mainly consist of rice, beans, pasta, meat, cereals and a variety of vegetables and seasonal fruits.
Free time
You will have free time at both of the locations although this will vary slightly depending on where you are based. During your free time you can go to the beach, chill out in the cabin, read a book and play card games. You will not be allowed to leave the project during your free time with the exception of your day off.
You will have be given one day off after six days of work, this will be decided with your project coordinator; during your day off you may like to go into town to use the internet, bars and restaurants or you may like to enjoy some of beautiful local beaches in the area. There are also tour companies that offer day trips such as kayaking, wildlife trips and many more.
Evenings can be very laid back and quiet, so you may like to read a book or play cards and games by candlelight, when you are not on shift.
Project support
Throughout your stay you will have the support and guidance of a volunteer co-ordinator and their team. They will be able to help you with any questions you may have or advice you may need. In addition, you are also able to contact our staff 24 hours a day should you need to, via our emergency contact number.
Project Age Limit
Minimum age 17 years with parental consent, maximum dependent on health and fitness of potential participant.
