Project: Kenya Outreach to Children
Name: Danielle MacKenzie
What do you think of your experience in Africa?
Well it is Monday morning and I leave for the airport in about half an hour...they are finally getting me out of the country! I am so sad and it is breaking my heart to say goodbye to all the wonderful people here, however I have had the best last week and I know I'll be back.
 |
I'm really pleased to say that the school I have been working at (Neema) is now a totally different school to what it was three months ago. The children and adults now have latrines, we have windows and doors, all the floors have been concreted, there is a clinic every Friday with health education classes included, there are now water tanks so the kids can have water at all times and the feeding programme is working really well. I thought it would be lovely to have a fun day as my way of saying goodbye and giving the kids some really happy memories.
|
We invited all the parents and guardians and I was amazed to see the entire community turned up and it was the best day of my life!
I did face painting (just for a change), but I was amazed at what the teachers and children organised and spent the whole day with a smile from ear to ear and crying tears of total and utter pride. Every class got up and did a traditional dance or poem or song. Three older children did a very moving poem about living with Aids and my nursery class all got up and sang Baa Baa Black sheep! The headmaster Jimmy got up with his guitar and sang a song that he had written for Marcus and I. As you can imagine I was a mess!

The teachers then got me up and dressed me in a traditional African dress that they had made which was beautiful but as you will see from the photos had mad shoulders!!
 |
We then had sports day races involving kids, teachers and volunteers. I have never seen so much laughter and happiness. There was a huge sense of pride in all who were there; I know that Neema is going to go from strength to strength. All the adults and parents started giving a few shillings. They are so poor but they said they wanted to support the school and to help it grow and by the end of the day we had around 15 pounds.... which is nothing to us but a massive amount to them. |
It means they have enough to open their own Neema bank account and start supporting themselves. I was so proud of every one of them that I still cry when I think about it.
So I'm all packed and ready for the off. Good bye beautiful Kenya and Australia here I come!!
I Will be in touch soon
loads of love
