Project Location
Our Base Camp is located on the Ugab River, in the northwestern regions of the Namib Desert, traditionally known as ‘Damaraland’ in Namibia.

Namibia
Namibia is known for its contrasting landscapes. The desolate Namib Desert is said to be the oldest in the world, with its high dunes and awe-inspiring sense of space. The central plateau, with its thorn bush savannah and rugged mountains, rising abruptly from the plains, gives way to the majestic Fishriver Canyon in the south. Dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone, prehistoric rock art, the ancient fossil plant and the Welwitschia mirabilis all bare witness to the timelessness of this country.

Free Time
If you are staying on the project for longer than 2 weeks, you will be driven into Swakopmund on the Friday afternoon, and will then begin the next two weeks on the Monday morning with some new volunteers. During this time, you will need to pay for your own accommodation and meals, but this can be budgeted on about £25 a day easily. No doubt there will be other volunteers to go out with for a few drinks and get back to normality for a few days!!!!

Swakopmund is known for its adrenalin activities and wide choice of things to do: During your weekends, you could go paragliding, quad biking, sky diving or sand boarding, or alternatively just relax in the picturesque and historic seaside town with a latte! All of these activities will need to be paid for from your own personal expenses, but are amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Getting There
You will need to fly into Walvis Bay or Windhoek, in Namibia arriving by 12pm on Sunday. Walvis Bay is just 20 minutes from Swakopmund and we will arrange your transfer for N$150. If you do decide to fly into the Windhoek, then we will book a simple bus transfer for you at the cost of N$300 (approx £22). The journey is around 4 hours but is comfortable and reliable. There is also a flight from Windhoek to Walvis Bay, which takes just 45 minutes at the cost of N$700 (approx £50), departing daily.

The project start-off point is in the Namibian coastal town of Swakopmund. When you arrive, you will stay in Swakopmund at Villa Weise Lodge, at your own cost of N$85 (approximately £7).

We meet on Sunday evening in the bar for a quick briefing and to meet our team members. On Monday morning, you will be collected at 12pm and driven to town to collect supplies before departing for the base camp, with a three-hour drive north. We spend two weeks at a time in the field, after which we head back to Swakopmund on the last Friday of your programme to relax and pick up further supplies.
