East Africa Sports Adventure Itinerary

Week 1 - Bush awareness Course

Day 1:
Transfer from Nairobi to El Karama, introduction to Kenya and orientation on how to prepare for a week in the bush – set up bush camp.
Day 2: Familiarisation of surrounding area, animal education, evening chat around the fire.
Day 3: Sights & Sounds of the bush, Rope traps practical, animal education, evening encounter with Samburu warriors, song and traditional dance.
Day 4: Fire making, tracking, afternoon tracking challenge, Night Walk
Day 5: Survival education, dangers and evasive action, finding water and food in the bush.
Day 6: Preparation for night out of main bush camp. Fly camp in bush, bush cooking lesson.
Day 7: De- brief, Pack and depart for next destination – Mt Kenya

As you can see from the outline itinerary above, you will learn a variety of different skills and have a number of experiences during your bush awareness course. You will learn all about the following:

Accommodation and Meals
Your accommodation will vary during this part of the programme. Some nights you will stay in two-man canvas dome tents and others, you will have a true authentic outdoor experience, staying in bush camps that you have built from scratch! All meals are provided on a group participatory basis.

Week 2: Mt Kenya Hiking Expedition

Day 8: Transfer from Lakipia to Mountain Lodge, nature walk through forest reserves to Mau Mau caves.
Day 9: Hike to Old Moses Camp (3300m).
Day 10: Hike to Shipton's Hut (4200m).
Day 11: Acclimatization day at Shipton's Hut, walks to peak area.
Day 12: Early morning summit attempt of Pt Lenana (4985m), short descent to Mintos/Hall Tarn camp.
Day 13: Descent to Meru Mount Kenya Cabins (3000m).
Day 14: De–brief and descent through Chogoria Forest to vehicles for transfer to Camel Trek.

Please Note: As you can imagine, this is an extremely challenging and demanding part of the expedition. You will need to make sure you are fit and ready for a challenge like this. Please consult your doctor and try to have a reasonable level of fitness before the trek.

All specialist climbing equipment, where necessary, will be provided for you. Porters will carry all necessary extras, however, you will need to carry your small day bag and personal items. What to bring and tips for the climb will be covered in your orientation meeting prior to the climb.

Accommodation and Meals
All accommodation will be in mountain huts, situated in camps along the trekking route. These are basic, but adequate for your stay each night. All meals are prepared on a group participatory basis.

Week 3: Samburu Culture and Camel Trek

Day 15: Transfers from Mt Kenya to Laikipia for first night bush camping with Camels and local Samburu guides.
Day 16 - 20: Depart before dawn on Camel trek into Samburuland. Spend 5 nights in Samburuland learning about and indulging in the traditional culture and wildlife on your camel trek.
Day 21: Pick up from meeting point in Samburuland for transfer to Kampala, Uganda – for the most exciting and final leg of your East African Expedition

The emphasis of this week is on learning all about the customs, culture and people of the Samburu. While you will also be able to track elephants and spot other wildlife, you will mainly learn how these incredible people live at one with nature in one of Kenya’s most harsh environments.

Accommodation and Meals
All accommodation is in two-man dome tents, with the opportunity for staying in self-made bush camps. All meals are provided on a group participatory basis.

Week 4: Nile River Expedition in Uganda

Day 22: Pick up in morning at Red Chilli Backpackers, Kampala and transfer to campsite on Nile River
Day 23: First day on the River Nile - white water rafting, camping on Kadogo Island
Day 24: Rafting and River boarding, sleeping at Hairy Lemon island
Day 25: Kayaking lessons, sleeping at Hairy Lemon island
Day 26: Start of quad bike expedition from Bujagali Falls, overnight at campsite
Day 27: Return on quad bikes via dirt tracks to camp at Bujagali Falls
Day 28: De-brief, awards ceremony & return transfer to Red Chilli Backpackers, Kampala

Traversing some of the most exciting rapids on the Nile, you will learn how to ride the natural surf of the river and how to tackle each rapid independently. Every rapid is filled with a rewarding adrenaline rush that makes you want a more challenging rapid each time! However, there are plenty of relaxing opportunities for you to sit back and absorb your surroundings, including game feeding in the waters and lush-green islands in the middle of the river.

To top an action-packed end of the expedition, you will have 2 days of quad biking along the Nile River, back to the River Expedition’s starting point, the “Nile High Base Camp” – What a fantastic way to view the rapids you have conquered during the previous 4 days!

All accommodation will be in two-man dome tents, with the option of staying in man-made bush camps too! Meals are provided on a group participatory basis.
