As a volunteer you will play a key role in improving the lives of these children. The children of Quito, Ecuador and their families need the support of volunteers as many are living in extreme poverty. By working with the children and their families the aim of the project is to alleviate this poverty and help them to make a better future for themselves.

Volunteer Role

The project now supports around 40 children and the work has diversified to aid children with financial, social and educational problems. Helping in the poorest areas of Quito, the project relies on volunteers who can lend a much needed helping hand to make a difference in the society.

The programme is divided into two sections. For two mornings a week you will take part in the ‘Street Children Outreach’ and the ‘School Support Programme’ takes place on weekday afternoons.

Street Children Outreach
The outreach programme is an important project, which assists children and their families, who live or work in the streets and who are socially disadvantaged. Some of your time will also be spent communicating with the children’s parents , the aim is that eventually the children and parents will have a better relationship.

School Support Programme
The programme offers underprivileged children a summer school during their vacation and English classes and homework supervision sessions during term time. The summer school volunteers will be planning activities in areas such as art, painting, music, English and reading and writing.

Many live in poverty and face problems, such as illiteracy, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and migration and are therefore incapable of providing proper care for their children.

Volunteer responsibilities may include:
  • Collect the children from their parent’s market posts
  • Ensure all children wash their hands
  • Take attendance daily
  • Provide care and support for the children and make sure they stay with the group
  • Plan activities in advance and ensure all materials are ready on the day of the project
  • Participate in activities and help children successfully complete projects
  • Make sure all children get returned to their parent’s market posts.

Accommodation and Meals

During your time at the project you will be staying with other volunteers in a house owned by a local host family from and in a safe and convenient area. You will share a room, usually with one other volunteer, and will have shared bathroom facilities. Two meals a day, breakfast and dinner, will be provided, as you will usually be out at the projects during the day. There are laundry facilities at the house and a swimming pool to chill out.
