Name: Emily Davies Gap Year Project: Medical and Orphan Volunteers Programme Zambia
 |
My time in Africa was spectacular. It provided me with a wealth of knowledge about different cultures and being able to experience their way of life first hand left me in awe. I am confident any future volunteer for this project will adopt a newfound love and respect for Africa and it's people. My only regret is that I did not sign up for longer!!
Being a student nurse in the UK, I found the project opened my eyes to different styles and forms of nursing and I learned how to adapt my skills to the environment I was in. It instilled a huge amount of respect in me towards people with different beliefs to my own.

The medical staff at Maramba Clinic were extremely welcoming and answered any questions I had with enthusiasm. Volunteers do not need to have a background in Health Care to be able to contribute in this project.
I firmly believe you get out of this project what you put in and any future volunteers should be encouraged to be extremely motivated, adaptable and show lots of initiative!!
We stayed in a large four-bedroom house on the outskirts of Livingstone centre with all other volunteers. It was very comfortable, spacious and clean but also quite homely and we functioned as a big extended family. A home away from home!
The project workers and leaders were on hand to answer any questions and help us organise our time so that we made the most of every minute. We took advantage of any activities we could around our commitments to the clinic and orphanage. We had lots of fun!
Were you pleased you went with Real Gap?
Yes definitely! I only had a month to plan, book and organise my trip and Real Gap's professionalism made me feel at ease form the beginning. Chloe Myers, a travel advisor at Real Gap, was a complete star and answered every one of my millions of questions. Her friendliness and approachability made the whole process easy and enjoyable. Cheers Chloe!!
I would recommend this project to any future volunteer!
