Festivals in America
|
|
There's a lot more to America than just eating in McDonalds, as you'll discover if you visit. These are just a few of the best festivals in America.
Ice-skating in Central Park or at the Rockefeller Centre - winter months - New York Skating in the shadow of New York's skyscrapers is a memorable experience. Hire your own skates and go twirl or just watch others whirl by.
 |
Whale watching Look out for details of whale watching trips in the early months of the year - hotspots include Los Angeles, Alaska, Washington and the Fallaron Islands near San Francisco.
Festivals in America - Mardi Gras - February/March, from January 6 until Ash Wednesday - New Orleans Mardi Gras is technically just one day - Fat Tuesday, or as we call it, Shrove Tuesday, but the preparations begin around six weeks earlier, on January 6, with things moving to a frenetic climax on Mardi Gras itself. |
Expect to see street parties and balls, and hear jazz, brass bands and funk. Groups of people known as krewes organise some of the longest parades you'll ever see - think miles, rather than metres!
Baseball - April - October Americans get very excited about their baseball, and its worth going to a game if you can.
Festivals in America - New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival - last weekend in April and first weekend in May - New Orleans A celebration of all things New Orleans, including jazz, zydeco, blues, Cajun and rap music, which are performed at the fairgrounds. There are no shortage of food stalls, which sell delicacies such as crawfish enchiladas and po-boys - submarine sandwiches.
Festivals in America - Independence Day - July 4 - countrywide Americans celebrate the anniversary of their independence from Britain with picnics, barbecues, parades (Provo, Utah has a spectacular parade), patriotic decorations and firework displays. Brooklyn also has a hot dog eating contest.
Festivals in America - Aloha Festivals - September/October - Hawaii This is your chance to wear a flower garland outside of a fancy dress pub-crawl! Festivals have a different theme each week and take place over six weeks, with floral parades and street parties. Contact the local tourist office for more information. |

|
Festivals in America - Fantasy Fest - last week of October (October 17 - 26 2008) - Key West, Florida Possibly the biggest and brightest fancy dress party you'll ever attend! Events such as the Royal Coronation Ball, when the king and queen of Fantasy Fest are crowned, the Pet Masquerade and the Pretenders in Paradise costume contest take place during the week and the finale is the Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade. The festival raises thousands of dollars for AIDS charities.
Festivals in America - Halloween - October 31 - countrywide Halloween happens on a much bigger scale in America and children often stagger home with pillow cases full of treats. Dressing up is not just for the kids, though - the streets of New York are filled with witches, Draculas and God knows who else. And that's before the parade along 6th Avenue! San Franciso puts on a good show, too.
Festivals in America - Thanksgiving - fourth Thursday of November - countrywide The emphasis is very much on eating - usually turkey with dozens of trimmings, followed by pumpkin pie. Some towns have parades and there are also American football matches.
