Festivals in Bolivia Festivals in Bolivia
Religious festivals don't mean all pray and no play!

Festivals in Bolivia - Virgen de la Candelaria - February 2 - Copacabana
Bolivians honour the Virgin Mary with parades, music, dancing, fireworks, barbecues and rather more drinking than you might associate with a religious festival! The religious bit comes in the form of an effigy of the Virgin Mary, and priests who bless more or less anything that moves. Even the wet season can't spoil the fun.

Festivals in Bolivia - carnival - February - several towns, particularly good in Oruro Bolivia's answer to Mardi Gras is a colourful, slightly frenzied affair that features devil dancers who continue an old tradition of worshipping the devil, the God of the underground charged with protecting the miners of the town. The masks and costumes are an inspiration for any future fancy dress parties! At the end of the festival is dia del agua, or water fight day. No prizes for guessing what happens then.

Festivals in Bolivia - Phujllay (or Pukllay) - April - Tarabuco Nearly 200 years after the Spanish were beaten in the Battle of Jumbati (1816), the Bolivians are still celebrating. It's the usual high-spirited food and drink fest with costumes that take the piss out of the Spanish, in case anyone dare forget they lost. Usually an all-nighter.

Festivals in Bolivia - Feast Day of the Almighty Lord - May - La Paz There are religious overtones to this colourful feast day but it's also a something of a dance show, with performances of khachua, morenada and many other styles.

Festivals in Bolivia - Exaltation of the Cross - September (September 14, 2008) - Oruru A feast day that's celebrated with numerous bands and some of the devil dancing seen at the carnival in February.
