Gap Year Brochure

Festivals in Peru - Anniversary of Lima - 18 January - Lima
The residents who founded Lima in 1535 aren't around to celebrate but their descendants do it pretty well for them. The Plaza de Armas hosts dance and musical performances.

Festivals in Peru

Festivals in Peru - Virgen de la Candelaria (Candlemass) - February - Puno A good two weeks are dedicated to honouring the patron saint of Puno. The diablada, or devil dance, is an oft-repeated highlight and the sound of panpipes and drums ring out at all hours. Add in fireworks, large quantities of food and colourful costumes and you have merriment most jolly.

Festivals in Peru - Celebration of Pisco Sour - February - Lima Peru's favourite drink is revered so fiercely that a day has been dedicated to it. Excellent news if you develop a liking for this brandy and lemon based cocktail. Tastings and other events.

Festivals in Peru - Carnival - February - countrywide
Peruvians give the Brazilians a run for their money when it comes to celebrating Lent, particularly in Cajamarca. There, decorated trees are paraded through the city and provide the focus for some crazy dancing and serious consumption of chicha, a sort of corn-based alcohol.
Festivals in Peru - Semana Santa (Easter week) - March/April - countrywide For Peruvians, Easter means more than eggs. Religious processions and ceremonies are supplemented by music, dancing, craft stalls, and a satisfying amount of eating and drinking. Different towns have different traditions: some of the best are in Cuzco, Arequipa and Ayacucho.

Festivals in Peru - Lemon Festival - June - Olmos The lowly lemon, which just happens to be among Olmos' top exports, is hailed with music, dancing, stalls and best lemon contests.

Festivals in Peru

Festivals in Peru - Purple month - October - Lima Purple month is actually a religious period devoted to Jesus, or the Lord of Miracles. He is associated with purple and you'll spot many people working it into their outfits. There are smaller celebrations and a procession to end all processions, a not unpleasant part of which is eating sweetmeats like Turrón de Doña Pepa.

Peru festivals

Festivals in Peru - Inti Raymi - 24 June - Sacsayhuamán, Cuzco Inti Raymi, or winter solstice, springs from a desire to please the Sun God and ensure more sunny days. (Something to try in Britain?!) Originally, animals were sacrificed but now the story is re-enacted with less bloodshed and more emphasis on costumes and dancing.

Festivals in Peru - Fiestas Patrias - July 28 and 29 - countrywide July 28 is Independence Day, while July 29 is dedicated to the armed forces and the police force. The celebrations are on the formal side, with the president's address on the first and a military parade on the second. There's bullfighting in Cotabambas.

Festivals in Peru - Fiesta de la Carmen - July - Paucartambo An effigy of the Virgin Carmen is paraded through the small town of Paucartambo, cheered on by colourful dancers and spectators.

Festivals in Peru - Festival del círculo (Circus season) - September - Lima Circus performances take place throughout the capital, with troupes flying in from all over the world.

Festivals in Peru - Chocolatadas - Christmas and beforehand - Cuzco Aside from the beautifully decorated Plaza de Armas, Cuszo also has chocolatadas - the giving of hot chocolate and gifts to the poor, particularly children. They're organised by local shops and businesses and the gratitude of the recipients is moving to see. Santurantikuy market, also in the Plaza de Armas, sells handcrafted nativity pieces.
