Need a career change? Want a qualification? Always dreamt of working alongside the wildlife of Africa? Then this is the ideal programme for you!

Situated in the grounds of a stunning Private Game Reserve in South Africa, the one year Development Programme for Nature Guides is aimed at providing you with an opportunity to gain a year of practical wildlife and conservation experience in South Africa and a number of qualifications. This then places you in an excellent position to obtain work in a number of paid, quality positions in the conservation field following the programme.

Field Guide Course Highlights

  • 6 months of practical experience, learning all the skills of Field Guiding
  • 6 months work experience at a Game Park in Africa
  • Obtaining a number of registered qualifications
  • Unlimited bush walks and game drives amongst the African wildlife
  • Practical experience through various excursions to Big 5 National Parks and other reserves
  • Wildlife population counts, snare checks on wildlife, anti-poaching control
  • An understanding of wildlife management and exploration within a stunning private reserve
  • Learning invaluable skills which include navigation, weapons handling and 4x4 off-road driving
  • A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live the African dream!

With the current growth being experienced in the tourism industry throughout South Africa, the demand for qualified and experienced nature guides is dramatically increasing. The reality is that very few establishments are willing to appoint a nature guide with no experience. This course bridges this gap by training learners in the relevant skills, as well as creating the opportunity to gain the necessary experience to enter the market as a qualified Nature Guide and earn a permanent living in this domain.

Programme Location

Training centre is nestled in a remote location within a 3400 hectare Nature Reserve, just 40km from Riversdale on the southern bank of the Brandrivier.

Accommodation and Meals

Once you have passed your exams and begin your work placement, your accommodation will vary, as lodges change their needs and alliances frequently. However, there are three types of placement:
  • Placement at a lodge (usually 4 star lodges or higher)
  • Placement at an animal rehabilitation centr
  • Placement with an overland safari operator
All meals will be provided during the course. Breakfast is usually on a help-yourself basis, whilst lunch and dinner will be catered for you.
