Expedition Itinerary

Week 1
After the first cultural shock in Delhi, we travel on to Jaipur. We visit the city palace, the Amber fort by elephant and drive past the ‘Hawa Mahal’, the Palace of winds. Next stop is Ranthambore National Park, one of the finest Tiger reserves in the country under the Project Tiger scheme. In Agra we have an early morning visit to the Taj Mahal for a sunrise view.

Week 2
In Haridwar we visit Har-Ki-Pauri on the bank of river Ganges to witness Aarti, a mesmerizing ceremony performed every evening at the time of sunset on the bank of river Ganges. In the morning we take the cable car to Mansa Devi temple (Hindu temple) to enjoy the beautiful view from the top of the hill. We drive to Rishikesh, at the foothill of the great Himalayas. Visit Laxman Jhula, a swing bridge, where you can cross over and take a walk through the lovely forest. The area is lined with beautiful temples, ashram, and small shops selling trinket items. In the afternoon we return to Delhi.

Week 3

We travel to Darjeeling by train and stay a couple of days in the city. We visit a tea plantation and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. At sunrise we take a trip to Tiger Hill for a fantastic view of the mountains.

We start our 6 day trek on the famous Singalila ridge, a prominent spur of high ground that lies at the Southern end of a long crest, which runs down from the Kanchenjunga massif and form the border between Sikkim and Nepal. We pass small villages and enjoy panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Everest and Lhotse. The level of the trek is introductory with the highest point of 3.636 meters.

Weeks 4 – 12
Volunteer work in schools in Bijanbari – you will teach English at a local state school, to children in their Junior-years. You will also spend the afternoons teaching other children who are unable to attend the school. Volunteers can bring their own skills, resources and ideas to aid their teaching, with suggestions for extra curricular activities welcomed.

Your group will live in a local house in the village and will be looked after by a local family. The house is a 10-minute walk from the school. During the volunteer placement you will take part in festivals and other local celebrations. During the volunteer work (normally at the end) you will go for a 5-day trip to Sikkim for sightseeing and rafting on the Teesta River.

After your volunteer placement, you will train back to Delhi for your final feedback meeting and have the day free for shopping.

That evening, you have your goodbye dinner and make your onward travel.
