Ghana Medical Volunteers

Trip code: GHMV

Mainly due to ignorance, oversubscription and insufficient funds, medical care in developing countries such as Ghana is can be extremely limited. Clinics and hospitals in these countries is often severely under resourced and are desperate for any additional support provided by volunteers.

By developing close relationships with several clinics and hospitals in the capital, Accra we are able to offer enthusiastic volunteers the opportunity to improve the quality and delivery of the local healthcare services.

The medical care placements will allow volunteers to help developing communities in Ghana as well as giving a valuable insight into the medical services throughout the country together with the difficulties they face.

Ghana Medical Volunteers

Programme Details

The institutions we have formed relationships with range from maternity clinics, helping with both pre and post natal care, to family planning clinics where volunteers will assist members of staff with giving advice on various sexual health issues.

A few of the clinics run outreach programmes for communities. These send groups of medical staff into local communities in poorer areas to visit families and patients. Throughout your placement on this project, you will have the opportunity to shadow and help the local medics in one or a number of these clinics.

The majority of a volunteer’s duties will be working together with professional staff to offer support. It is likely that you will spend a lot of your time shadowing local staff in their daily work whilst observing how they interact with and manage their patients. Other parts of your role will include pro active and you will be invited to offer a more hands-on role to the care being provided.

The work in these clinics will be varied. You will spend time in recovery and maternity wards as well as operating theatres. Not only will you offer practical work and assistance, volunteers can also make a lasting impact on patients and their families through emotional support you can provide.

A volunteer’s role offers an eye opening experience when assisting medics and nurses on their community visits. Here you will see the living conditions and difficulties that so many Ghanians are faced with. The community outreach staff are sent out to the homes of local families to deal with a variety of situations ranging from malaria sufferers to pregnant women and newborn babies.

Volunteers must be prepared for some disorganisation in the work place and be self motivated and pro active in their approach. However, there will always be ongoing support from our staff in Ghana, other volunteers and the local medics you will be working with. There is also the option of spending a part of your time volunteering on other projects in the country. This includes teaching work in school as well as care work with orphans.

Please note: Journey times may vary from project to project. Please contact one of our Africa team for further information.
