Your Placement
Ghanaian schools operate at three key stages and there are a number of different levels at which you can teach: Nursery, Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School. With the younger children, you will have the opportunity to teach English as a foreign language, helping your students develop their fluency and conversational confidence. For the older children, English skills are stronger so there will be ample opportunity to teach a broad range of subjects. The current syllabus covers English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science, French, IT, RE, Design, Construction and Agricultural Studies. There are also opportunities to teach drama, journalism or PE. Furthermore, you will have a chance to teach extra curricular activities of your own choice.
Volunteer Role
You will be placed in a local school and be responsible for teaching students English and/or other subjects. Your role will be to offer inspiring and exciting lessons that will improve the literacy, numeracy and communication skills of your class. You will receive help with issues such as lesson planning, discipline and cultural courtesies from a number of sources, including school teachers, the in-country staff and other volunteers. However, it is important to remember that your role is intended to be as independent and self-supported as possible. This will enable you to develop greater self-confidence in your own organisational skills. In addition to regular class-teaching, you will be encouraged to introduce your own ideas and get involved with extra-curricular activities which might include art and design, drama, music, sport or the production of a school newspaper. Above all, you will have the flexibility to decide how you can best contribute to the school environment and education in Ghana.
