Give Something Back
|
 |
A welcome development in the travel industry in recent years, has been an increasing interest in the notion of ‘responsible tourism.' This is basically the idea that you should try and ‘give something back' to countries that you visit on your travels.
There are many ways you can give something back when you travel. You could, for example, choose to make a monetary donation to a reputable charity that carries out vital work in the country you are visiting. One of the best and most direct ways to give something back to places you visit, however, is to get involved with a volunteer project.
It is possible to give something back by volunteering on just part of your gap year or career break - you don't have to commit for an entire year - and it's a far more satisfying way of making a positive contribution. When you give something back by volunteering you also immerse yourself in the local culture and get to see a side of life travellers who don't volunteer won't experience. |
 |
When you give something back by volunteering you gain a huge sense of personal achievement and are likely to forge enduring friendships with local people and fellow volunteers alike. If you give something back the new skills and experiences you acquire often come in useful at a later date - and they look great on a CV too.
If you want to give something back on your gap year, why not volunteer?
 |
There are three main fields in which you can do so:
- Give something back
- work on a people-based volunteer project.
- Give something back
- work on an animal welfare volunteer project.
- Give something back
- work on an environmental conservation volunteer project.
