Name: Greg Tannahill
Gap Year Project: CVA - Conservation Volunteers Australia

Hey all, I've been doing volunteer work for CVA (Conservation Volunteers Australia) for two weeks now in Gladstone. I've been living in a house for free with all my shopping done for me. Sweet!

I've been with five other volunteers during Gladstone. Koke the Spaniard, Denis the Frenchie, Joanne the Brit, Ivy, Mandi from Hong Kong - quite a bit of a rainbow family.

Our first few days of work involved pulling up weeds called 'mother of millions'. And as you've probably guessed, there were millions of them. We then started building sediment traps in gulleys to stop erosion. Then we drove out to the bush to do more weeding. But this time we wedded massive tree things and hacked them apart. Much more fun.

Went out in Gladstone one night. Was a bit of a laugh. The highlight of the night was Koke snogging a 50-year-old woman. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! *shudder*. Last weekend I went on a day cruise to Lady Musgrave Island, one of the southern islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

I snorkelled with turtles, checked out coral, glass bottom boat tours, went on the island (which is entirely made up of dead coral). Great day. The night before that we stayed in a place called ‘Cool Bananas' in Anges Waters. Which was cool. But it was crashing down with rain all day and night - proper monsoon-like rain. Just walking down the street I was ankle deep. Stairs became waterfalls and people became soggy.

CVA is now sending me along with Koke, Denis & Jo to 'Woody Island' for a week of work. It's a small Island just off Fraser Island. We'll be camping all week. No showers, toilets, means of communication. Its gonna be ace! No idea what sort of work we'll be doing.

So that's about it so far.

Love Greg
xxx
