The Guatemala Community Outreach project is one of our most successful community development programmes- a direct result of the fantastic efforts and achievements of volunteers who have helped change the lives of the children of Alotenango. This project is perfect for anyone looking to experience life in a typical Guatemalan community with volunteers from around the world, working to improve the quality of life of some of Guatemala’s poorest families.

Volunteer Role - Guatemala Outreach

Education
As a volunteer in Guatemala, there are a number of activities and projects that need volunteer assistance; one of the main roles being to help educate and support the children in classes such as mathematics, physical education, handicraft, teaching English computing, teaching the kids to read and write and awareness workshops.

Your role as a volunteer varies according to your interests and is very flexible to change when you are on the project.

Carpentry
There is also a carpenter’s workshop, which you can work in; here schoolchildren get the opportunity to learn how to work timber. They are taught to handle tools, to use a hammer and saw, to measure, to sandpaper, to paint and similar skills. There are ten children per class and volunteers are needed to keep this class running.

Building projects
The project has three rented buildings and are looking to expand with volunteer help to build new classrooms. No building experience is necessary as there are often experienced builders at the project.

Project Location

Alotenango is located 14 km away form Antigua and is known as Cakuxaha, which means Home of the Guacemayas. The village is situated at 1388 meters above sea-level and is surrounded by the volcanoes Agua and Fuego, the mountains Soledad, El Astillero, Sonay and Coco.

Accommodation: Host families

Most participants live with one of our typical Guatemalan families. All families are close friends of the onsite staff and will speak Spanish most of the time (to help you get the most from your time in Guatemala) although some family members do speak some English.

Spanish tuition
Spanish tuition can be easily combined with this volunteer programme, see prices below or click here for more information about the
