Project Location
In and around:
Antigua – beautiful colonial city in the West of the country
Lake Atitlan – also in Western Guatemala
Flores and the Tikal ruins in Northern Guatemala
Livingston - chilled out city on the Caribbean Coast
Lanquin and Semuc Champey – relatively central town and natural pools.
Guatemala
Guatemala, in the Mayan heartland, is Central America’s best-kept secret. As well as lively markets and world famous colourful textiles, it boasts the highest and most active volcanoes and outstanding natural beauty, from rugged mountains to tropical rainforests.

There is an intriguing mix of cultures, influenced by a turbulent and fascinating past. Locals take pride in their traditions and many still wear the colourful intricately handcrafted costumes of their ancestors. Guatemala is a firm office favourite, voted by the Real Gap staff as a top place to visit as you will undoubtedly discover when you experience its wonders!

Weather
Guatemala enjoys a good climate all year round. The Pacific and the Caribbean coast both get quite hot and humid, but you always have the sea breeze to cool you off. There is a rainy season, between May and October, but there are generally only showers in the afternoon and the rest of the day can be entirely pleasant.

Altitude controls the climate somewhat, so the low-lying jungle areas are hot and humid all year round, whereas the higher areas including Antigua and Guatemala City have a more comfortable climate that can get quite cool at night.

Free Time
During week one at the language school extra activities are organised by our on-site staff for you during your free time, on the evenings and at the weekend, including salsa classes, cooking classes, sports, tours of the towns and happy hours at bars & restaurants!

During week 2, when taking part in the volunteer work, you will have free time in the evenings and weekends. During this time you can take excursions to other parts of the country, or stay in town to get to know the community and people more intimately.

Getting There

You will need to arrive into Guatemala City airport where you will be met and taken to your home stay accommodation. As your Spanish language classes start on the Monday morning you will need to arrange to arrive into Guatemala on the Sunday before your start date.
