Hawaii’s Kaua’i is a paradise island and a haven for travellers from all over the world. Volunteering here gives you the opportunity to help conserve this beautiful location whilst enjoying this nature lovers’ island. This project allows you to work in the dense and stunning native Hawaiian forests, helping to keep the areas weed-free and thriving. In exchange for your work, you will get an education about Hawaii’s unique ecology and a chance to experience rare native plant communities. This is the perfect programme for someone with a keen interest in botany or ecology, and for someone who enjoys a challenge and wants to contribute to a valuable team effort.
The Volunteer Project Volunteering on this project gives you the chance to spend time in one of Hawaii’s finest state parks and will enable you to learn and gain experience in the taxonomy, function and management of Hawaiian flora and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as threats to these native forests and what can be done about them. You will receive full safety training and instruction in resource management methods.

Project Support Throughout your time in Hawaii, you will have the full guidance of the staff onsite. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.
In addition, you will receive an emergency contact for onsite staff when you arrive and we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Orientation You will receive a brief orientation upon arrival. You will additionally be provided with a daily safety talk to remind you of the days’ conservation tasks and to cover safety issues.
Accommodation & Meals During your time on the programme, you will be accommodated in a cosy rustic cabin in the heart of the Koke’e forest. The heated cabin has 4 bedrooms with bunk beds, hot showers and a basic kitchen. There is also a large living room. You will find a small library of books and a computer with Internet access for your convenience.
Meals are not provided but you will have use of the kitchen where you can cook for yourself, or take it in turns with other volunteers. Project staff can help you with transport to the nearest grocery store to pick up supplies by using an onsite vehicle. If you would like to have transportation for more than the once a week grocery/laundry run you will need to hire a car during a portion or the entirety of your trip.
Laundry facilities are not available onsite however you will have access to these facilities in the nearest town.
