Name: Holly Chinnery
Programme: Thailand Experience (8 week option)
Dates: 03/05/07 - 31/06/07

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
After deciding that this was the programme I wanted to join, I was very excited and a little nervous due to the fact that it was somewhere I've always wanted to visit and it involved all the activities I wanted to do such as trekking.

How did Real Gap assist you?
Real Gap was a great help, supplying me with information that covered the most trivial to the “unthinkable” questions. The information sent was very thorough and made me more excited about the experience. Any questions I had, (which I had a few last minute ones!), I could email or phone them, even at the last minute!  Real Gap was really friendly, happy to help which helped me put my mind to rest. Their service was exceptional, a lot better than I expected.

What was the accommodation like?
The 1st stop off at the “Royal Hotel” in Bangkok was pure luxury - a great choice of hotel!

The eco-house “Brown House” did get a little getting used to, as we were pre-warned in the info pack. It reminded many of us of school trips. The rooms were quite small considering it was housing a minimum of 6 people, and the fans on the wall didn't really help those on the other side of the room. The bathroom was fine, so was the eating area and garden.

Looking back the accommodation was better than it felt at the time - probably due to us not being fully acclimatised.

What did you think of the programme?
I thoroughly enjoyed the programme, though there were highs and lows, but as they say, without the lows there would be no highs!

What was the most memorable moment of your trip?
The most memorable part of the trip must be the volunteering in the final 4 weeks, where I did construction work in a Learning Centre for the poor children of Ranong. This gave me a great sense of achievement. I felt like I was actually contributing and helping those in need. We all managed to build a well, a bench; a tool shed, moved thousand of plants, (literally!), and started work on the toilet/shower block.

A close second has to be the trekking - felt like Jane from Tarzan!  Climbing vines, ducking and diving under trees, hopping over pebbles, and even falling waist deep in the river was such great fun! Really loved it!! The camp fires at night certainly made you feel at one with nature!

Did your project and destination meet your expectations? Any anecdotes?
To be honest, at first the group felt like this wasn't what we had singed up for. However, a week into the experience, once we knew what was happening, and after getting used to the whole way of life out there, it did meet my expectations. The Buddhist temple was not quite what we were expecting; it seemed quite “make-shift” to us, like it was only put there for purposes such as ours. It probably didn't help looking at all the stunning temples the previous week! This didn't stop us enjoying and throwing ourselves fully into the Buddhist lifestyle!!

There was many laughs throughout the trip, the most prominent one being -within ten minutes of the start of the trek, I slipped on a rock whilst crossing from side to side of the river and fell waist deep in it. I had to carry on the rest of the day, (7 hours) in soaking wet clothes, squeaking walking boots trekking high and low. Surprisingly it didn't bother me that much at all - was rather funny!

How have you benefited from your experience?
I do think that this trip has changed my outlook more than anything else. Previously I liked to know what was happening in advance, but on the trip a few things could change without much notice - a common thing in the Thai culture. Also, having quite a vast amount of people on the trip I became more patient, for example, waiting to use the bathroom, waiting for people to come back from shopping, (sometimes having to wait 45 minutes on a bus in the sweltering heat)! I am much more laid-back nowadays, and have found myself smiling much more to people I don't know as is also common of Thai people!!

What advice could you offer to someone considering this project?
I'd defiantly say “GO FOR IT”. It is a once in a lifetime experience. It will be hard to begin with, but it is only getting accustomed to the Thai way of life. Be prepared to take things as they come, and be laid back! Given a week you'll get used to everything, the heat, the culture, and the many different personalities you'll come across out there. Just throw yourself into every aspect and you will be sure to have the time of your life!
