This project is located in Utila, The Bay Islands, Honduras.

Honduras
Bordering the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south, Honduras exudes natural beauty with its crystal clear waters, stunning beaches, lush jungles and awe-inspiring wildlife.

This pristine setting makes Honduras a paradise for dive and marine conservation enthusiasts!
Honduras lies between Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest and Nicaragua to the southeast. It is the second largest country in Central America and boasts a tropical and rugged natural beauty. The country operates at a notoriously slow pace and at present a low tourist-profile makes it perfect for travellers who want to escape the beaten track.

Utila
Utila is the smallest yet most unspoiled of the bay islands. Characterised by a tranquil mangrove lagoon nestled in the warm Caribbean Sea, Utila is a ‘tropical paradise’. It is home to extensive coral reefs teeming with exotic marine life and the elusive whale shark is a giant visitor to the island’s waters. Utila is at the southern end of the Mesoamerican barrier reef system, which is the second largest reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef; making the waters of Utila perfect for marine exploration!

Weather
Temperatures in Honduras vary between 20 and 30°C year round. The weather is generally warm and humid with lots of sun! From December to March it is the rainy season on the islands but it is still warm!

Free Time
Despite a busy working schedule you will have plenty of time to relax and chill out in true Latin American style! You will have free time from 7pm onwards each night and on Saturdays the entire day is your own. Sunday is scheduled as a ‘fun day’ and volunteers do not have to do any research but can instead dive for fun and explore the island’s incredible natural beauty! Utila is very small and is easy to explore on foot, by pushbike or in little boats.

The island harbours an abundance of interesting caves, freshwater springs, deserted picturesque beaches and stunning sandy quays making it perfect to explore! There are plenty of vibrant bars and restaurants with a beer costing around 80p! It is also possible to arrange a trip to the mainland coast and go white water rafting down the River Cangrejal or you could even charter a yacht and sail to the protected nature reserve of Cayos Cochinos.

Getting There
You will need to arrive into San Pedro Sula International and then head over to Utila to arrive on the Monday that your project is due to start. You will get to Utila by an internal flight – the journey will take approximately 70 minutes and costs around $100.

When you arrive on Utila you will be met at the airport where you will be collected by mini van or pick-up truck and taken to your accommodation!

Please note: Our onsite staff can make reservations for flights from San Pedro Sula to Utila but payment must be made (cash or credit/debit card) on collection of the tickets from the reservations desk at San Pedro airport.
