Typical Daily Itinerary The daily itinerary varies to incorporate all aspects of research depending on the requirements of the research centre, but in general volunteers would do three mega fauna surveys a week, up to 10 dives (including three fun dives), an office duty and one terrestrial survey.
A typical itinerary is as follows:
Monday to Friday
- 6.00am Get up and have breakfast
- 7.00 am Arrive at Research station for daily brief
- 7.30 am - 12pm Rotation 1
- Lunch Lunch either at volunteer house or on research trip
- 12pm - 5pm Rotation 2
- 5pm - 6pm Time to relax and watch the sunset
- 6pm Communal dinner at volunteer house
- 7pm - 10pm Free time, optional presentations, Spanish classes etc
Note: A rotation can either be boat work (mega fauna surveys); Dive work (underwater data collection); Terrestrial work (mangrove and coconut surveys); community work (taking school kids snorkelling or organising beach clean-ups) and administrative tasks (helping in the UCME visitor centre; inputting data on the computer, inventorying and maintaining equipment).
Saturday and Sunday There are no research activities on Saturdays and Sundays. Saturday is a day off for you to relax and enjoy Utila and on Sunday volunteers have the option of up to three fun dives (no extra charge).
