House of Light in Buenos Aires
In the last few years, the AIDS epidemic has rapidly spread through Argentina's female population. In Argentina, there are between 140,000 and 160,000 women who are infected with the disease, with about 60% of them unaware that they carry the virus.
In 2002, a centre was opened that offered shelter to children aged between 6 and 16 years. The centre has since broadened its scope and now also assists children who come from low-income families, who are in need of affection and support.
Volunteer RoleVolunteers will be giving much needed attention to the children, helping with English and homework support. In the afternoons, volunteers will be responsible for giving classes to the children. Volunteer tasks will be varied but will generally include:
- Playing with the children
- Assisting the teachers with workshops
- Changing nappies
- Teaching computer skills
- Setting up an educational workshop about your home country.
LocationThe project is located on the outskirts of the city of Buenos Aires, in the Parque Patricios neighbourhood.
Accommodation and MealsVolunteers stay in a student residence sharing with one or two other volunteers. Single rooms are available for an extra supplement. Volunteers budget and cook their own meals while at the residence.
