How to Travel Ethically

  • If you want to travel ethically you should get as informed as possible about your host country. Cultivating an attitude of learning about the country you are visiting is a vital part of how to travel ethically.
How to travel ethically
  • Knowing how to travel ethically means knowing as much as possible about your role on the placement. As part of our ‘How to travel ethically policy', our written job descriptions indicate clearly what your volunteer role will involve.

  • Knowing how to travel ethically involves cultivating the attitude of being a “learner” and “guest”. Though you may believe part of how to travel ethically involves “giving something back” or “helping those less fortunate than yourself,” you will often find that it is you yourself who learns the most from the local community.
  • Knowing how to travel ethically involves respecting the rights of people and local traditions. Part of your ethical travel responsibility involves finding out as much as possible about local traditions, dress codes and taboos.
  • Knowing how to travel ethically involves acting in a professional manner. As part of our ‘how to travel ethically' principles, Real Gap requires professionalism from all its programme partners. Equally we request that you behave in a responsible professional manner, according to ethical travel codes.

  • Knowing how to travel ethically means cultivating an attitude of openness and flexibility. Part of how to travel ethically means developing flexible and open attitudes that can cope with the differently ways things are done in other countries. Ethical travel means learning an attitude of going with the general flow of each country's pace of life and values.
