Hwange National Park Conservation
This project offers you an opportunity to work in the magnificent Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s premier wildlife destination, directly assisting the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management in the conservation of the Park.
On this exciting programme, you will also have the opportunity to spend an optional week in the stunning Matobo National Park, classed as a World Heritage Site.
Volunteer RoleAs a volunteer you will have access to the most remote areas of one of Africa's premier game reserves and its surrounding areas, where there are huge herds of elephant, buffalo, plains-game, lion and leopard.
Project Highlights You will be involved in important wildlife conservation work, such as snare sweeps, game counts, visual observations and the darting of snared animals and the subsequent removal of these snares when necessary. Generally, your volunteer duties will involve some or all of the following:
- Small carnivore research
- Participation in studies monitoring elephant populations and their damage to vegetation
- Wildlife population counts and snare checks on wildlife
- Spoor transects and boundary patrols involving the assessment of what game has been in the area, assisting trackers in searching for signs of any illegal activity from poachers
- Assisting game scouts in the darting of snared animals and the removal of snares
- Gaining a deeper understanding of large-scale wildlife management and in-depth exploration of Zimbabwe’s most famous National Park
Project LocationYour base in Hwange is a safari camp, located on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s Big 5 Hwange National Park and near the rural village of Dete; just two hours drive from Victoria Falls.
