If you are short for time this is an ideal programme as it gives you a taste of volunteering and visits to the major sights. The programme brings together volunteers through common undertakings of social awareness campaigns and community development work.

Community Development Work India

Volunteer Role

The aim of the project is to improve public facilities in the village and bring attention and awareness to important social issues. Your work on the project will depend on the precise needs of the village, its social issues at stake and the condition of its public facilities. In general, there will be two areas of work i.e. labour work projects and social development work.

Labour work projects

  • Restoration and decoration of Anganwadis/Balwadis (= day-care centres)
  • Restoration and decoration of the village primary school
  • Painting and decoration of school interiors
  • Preparing sports facilities for basketball, badminton, court and football.
  • Plantation of flowers, ornamental plants and trees at school campus
  • Repairing houses of Below Poverty Line families
  • Restoration and decoration of village community facilities with participation of the villagers.
  • Motivating teams of children from the village to clear garbage, plant trees etc.
  • Construction of dustbins (follow up action is intended to create hygiene awareness amongst children)

Social development work

  • Importance of nutrition and balanced diet
  • Awareness about hygiene and health care issues
  • IDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorders) awareness campaign
  • Importance of breast feeding
  • Precautionary measures against HIV infection

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Brief orientation on work involved and important cultural considerations
  • Dedicated on-site assistance from English speaking guides
  • Most meals (breakfast only whilst on weekend excursion)
  • All relevant materials for improvement of community facilities
  • Visit to Taj Mahal, the most famous of Indian historical monuments including one night’s stay in Agra and local English speaking guide
  • All transport between projects, sightseeing, excursions and airport transfers within specified times
  • Personally met at Delhi airport
  • Accommodation for duration of project
  • Weekend excursions as per itinerary
  • Morning yoga sessions for one week
  • Free workshop lesson on Indian cooking.

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Flights
  • Tourist Visa
  • Personal travel insurance cover for the duration of your placement
  • Meals on day one and lunches and dinners during weekend excursions
  • All items of a personal nature such as gifts, clothes etc
  • E-mail and telephone calls made
