Gap Year Project: Orphan Teaching Programme Zambia

Everything is going well in Zambia. I'm happy to offer some reassurance to new volunteers. As you know I understand the apprehension of coming to Africa to do a volunteer project as I had reservations myself. However, having been here 3 weeks I can say that I feel completely safe in the town of Livingstone.
I've not had any problems myself and have not heard of anyone else having any. I was worried about bringing my camera and getting mugged, but I've been out and about with it and have felt safe. |
I also had visions of being hijacked when in a vehicle, but I've been traveling to and from school, around town etc in the project vehicle and not felt at risk once.
It seems in Britain we've formed a picture of Africa that doesn't really exist; Livingstone is not a place where danger lurks around every corner. In fact I feel a lot safer here than I do in London.
From my experience at the school I find the people in Zambia very welcoming and friendly and I'm sure that the same will be found at the medical centre. The nurses were friendly on my visit there. |

Since my arrival here I've been staying in a hostel in Livingstone, which has been great, nice pool etc. However, tomorrow we are moving into a house that we've just started renting.
Really looking forward to living in our own house, I stayed in a similar house in Zimbabwe when I went there for the weekend and even though I like staying in the hostel it was nice to have your own space in the house.

It will be nice having all the volunteers living together, much more of a family type feel (this is how it felt in the set up in Zimbabwe, all the volunteers formed a tight group and were very supportive for one another).
I'm having a very positive experience and would recommend that others come out to Africa as it is both mutually rewarding for the volunteer and for the people of Africa.
